I read a spec sсript called Providence by this guy called Jeff Nathanson. He rewrote it. I flew to South Africa for one day to convince Jackie Chan to be in the movie. Jackie agreed to do it, came to L.A., sat with Chris Tucker, we had a meeting, and Chris Tucker was talking and said “Man, I’m a big fan. I love you.” Jackie Chan started talking and at the end of the meeting, Chris Tucker goes “I like him, but he don’t speak a word of English, does he?” and Jackie Chan said “I like Chris Tucker, but I don’t understand a word he’s saying.” From that moment on, I knew it was gonna be a brilliant combination. These guys had this love for each other, this affection, but literally did not understand one word. We used that in the movie. Whenever Jackie would speak and Chris couldn’t understand it, he goes “You don’t speak English, do you?” We used that “Do you understand the words that are coming out..” All that stuff came from reality.
